Display Dimmer vs Twinkle Tray

Both put useful brightness controls in the Windows tray. The meaningful differences are how they handle an unsupported monitor, advanced monitor controls, and the price of their extras.

At a glance

Display Dimmer is a better fit when an external display cannot reliably use DDC/CI, because gamma dimming is already part of its stable brightness path. It also offers software color temperature and contrast, including on setups without the corresponding monitor VCP features. The most advanced automation and unlimited temperature control require the one-time Pro upgrade.

Twinkle Tray is an excellent choice if you want a completely free, open-source tray utility. Its hardware-monitor toolkit is deeper: contrast, volume, inputs, power, custom VCP controls, calibration curves, and flexible time/idle/sun schedules. It also has per-app profiles and HDR SDR-brightness controls.

Implementation matters too: Display Dimmer is built with Windows WPF/.NET 8; Twinkle Tray uses Electron/Node.js. That is worth considering, but architecture alone does not prove which app uses less memory or CPU on your PC.

Deeper hardware controls

Twinkle Tray exposes supported DDC/CI features such as contrast, volume, input, color temperature, and power in its interface. It also supports custom VCP sliders and monitor calibration curves. Display Dimmer offers advanced raw VCP writes through its Pro CLI/API, but these are not general-purpose GUI controls.

Stable software fallback

Display Dimmer can dim via the GPU gamma ramp when DDC/CI does not work. It tracks verified failures per display, can offer a possible reason and retry, and may suspend unstable hardware writes. Those clues are not a guaranteed diagnosis, and gamma changes the image rather than the backlight. Twinkle Tray's beta adds optional gamma control.

More free automation

Time, idle, sun-position, per-app profiles, and hotkeys are free. Display Dimmer also has time and app automation, but the free tier limits their number and scope; Pro removes those limits and adds the local automation API.

Different approaches

Color and HDR

Display Dimmer's Temperature slider is software-based and does not require a monitor color-temperature VCP feature. Twinkle Tray's color-temperature control uses supported monitor hardware, and its stable app has a dedicated HDR SDR-brightness slider. Neither app can make every HDR/monitor combination behave identically.

Which should you choose?

Choose Twinkle Tray if…

Your displays respond to DDC/CI or WMI, you want more monitor hardware controls, and you value a fully free, open-source app. Its schedules, app profiles, and HDR slider are real strengths.

How we checked

Last reviewed . We installed Twinkle Tray from Microsoft Store (package 2025.11225.11438.0), then compared the developer's published stable 1.17.2 documentation, tagged release notes, README, and tagged interface strings. The tray-only interface was not accessible enough in this remote session for a full hands-on feature test. Display Dimmer claims were checked against its current 2.2.10 release and site documentation.

We did not benchmark CPU, RAM, battery, monitor latency, or reliability. Both apps depend on the particular monitor and connection, so a feature listed here is not a promise that it will work on every display. Twinkle Tray's 1.18 beta is mentioned only where it materially changes the comparison; beta features are not treated as stable.
